![]() They were both raised on the battlefield, and the former died thinking he could achieve nothing but war. Gray Fox and Raiden are examples of what happens when you let your memes take control. You must take control of your life, and not let yourself be guided by the wind. One of the most important messages in the series, however, is that you mustn’t be chained to genes or memes. The whole subject of genes and memes is an interesting one that’s explored in nearly all of the Metal Gear titles. A lot of the «heroes» of the series believe in memes (Big Boss, Solid Snake, Revolver Ocelot), and a lot of the «villains»in the series believe in genes (Zero, Para-Medic, Liquid Snake). This may be why he respected Venom so much: He saw that memes were the basis of his talents not genes. That’s exactly what happened to Venom: They re-wrote his backstory, and prompted him to live out his life in their intended way.īig Boss’ skepticism towards the efficiency of genetic control was proven right, as The Patriots would come to realize. By manipulating the context of people’s lives, they could influence their actions and identity without them knowing. When you think about, memes became the main principle of The Patriots’ control. ![]() That may be what prompted The Patriots to create the S3 plan in MGS2: They saw what memes could do to people, and that they held much more power than genes. After years of failed attempts, Zero had successfully created a duplicate of Big Boss. But the success of Venom must’ve come as a huge surprise, impressing even Big Boss. Venom Snake was initially a project Zero created in order to help Big Boss stay under XOF’s radar. – Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001) « Given the right situation – the right story – anyone can be shaped into Snake.» Big Boss, much like Ocelot, believes in the power of memes. Venom Snake, however, is a mental copy of Big Boss. So how does this make sense? He objects to the clones, but a mental copy is alright? This might have something to do with the fact that Big Boss doesn’t believe in genetic destiny. Ever since his conversations with Para-Medic, Big Boss has objected to the idea that talents can be genetically replicated. – Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015) However, Big Boss never considered them an extension of himself. It’s important to note that the role Venom takes in the original Metal Gear is exactly the role that Zero hoped Big Boss would grant to Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and/or Solidus Snake. While it’s clear that Big Boss will do anything to achieve his goal, his honest conversations with Revolver Ocelot during the Truth Tapes seems to suggest that he holds a deep admiration for Venom. Some say it’s because he wanted to manipulate Venom Snake into joining Outer Heaven. ![]() – Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015) ![]() However, the ending of The Phantom Pain makes it clear that Big Boss considers Venom Snake to be an extension of himself. – Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008) «I never thought of you as a son, but I always respected you as a soldier and as a man.» A major plot point in the Metal Gear saga, particularly MGS1, -4 and -V, is the fact that Big Boss doesn’t want anything do with his clones – at least as far as treating them as more than just soldiers. ![]()
